I’ve been looking at data from the electoral rolls for 2002/3. The distribution of Micklethwaites (and variants) is quite interesting (to me at least!). Based on postcodes and a sample of about 750 the results are:
- S* 157 all Sheffield
- S70* 99 all Barnsley
- LS* 73 all Leeds
- HD* 72 all Huddersfield
- WF* 65 all Wakefield
- DN1+ 51 Doncaster
- LS15+ 42 Outer Leeds
- LS1+ 29 Inner Leeds
- S71 26 Monk Bretton/Royston
- S70 25 Central Barnsley
- HD1 23 Huddersfield
- YO1+ 23 York/Malton area
- HD7 22 Colne Valley
- WF12 21 Dewsbury/Thornhill
- S36 19 Penistone/Stocksbridge
- S72 17 Cudworth
- WF2+ 17 Wakefield/Castleford/Pontefract/Ossett
- YO11+ 17 Scarborough/Filey/Brid
- S1+ 16 Sheffield centre
- S60* 15 Rotherham
- WF14 15 Mirfield
- DN22 14 Retford
By comparison, from the 1881 census, with a sample of about 450, and based on Poor Law Union districts (which don’t map on to postcodes of course):
- Huddersfield 98
- Dewsbury 72
- Barnsley 69
- Wortley 61
- Wakefield 27
- Bramley 17
- Ashton u/Lyne 16
- York 15
- Rotherham 12
- Hemsworth 8
- Pontefract 7
- Doncaster 6
- Rochdale 6
I hope you find it interesting too!
